Our Community is very well aware of common kinds of abuses specific to our community like dowry harassment, female foeticide, etc.,but little is known about another genre of abuse called the Elder abuse.

Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older adults largely remains under-recognized, or treated as an unspoken problem. No community or country in the world is immune from this social problem.

Abuse and neglect of older adults is a complex and multi-faceted problem. Studies say that most often the abusers are often their own children, other family members such as grandchildren or even spouses. Elder abuse encompasses many different types of harms( Physical, emotional, social, mental, sexual and financial) and can occur in domestic, community or institutional settings. Raising awareness of elder abuse is a challenge. The issue requires complex, multiple and integrated responses from a very wide range of sources at individual, institutional, societal and global level.

The first step to recognizing the needs of the elders is in your own home. All it takes are these three simple things,

It is up to each and everyone of us to do our part in raising awareness. Elder Abuse has no limits as to who it affects, it could even one day happen to you. Find your own unique voice as you listen to the voices of people who have been touched by the misfortune of elder abuse.
